Dear MCPS Board of Education,
I am aware that the Superintendent of MCPS has presented a 2019-2024 CIP budget that no longer includes the scheduled modernization of Poolesville High School.
This is unacceptable.
Please make sure that the 2019-2024 CIP includes a major modernization project for Poolesville High School. This is a project that is greatly needed now, much more so than when first proposed in 2006.
Poolesville High School has not been renovated in 50 years! In addition to a host of UNSAFE physical conditions (old and outdated plumbing, lack of storage, lack of space, encapsulated asbestos, inaccessible restrooms, limited cafeteria space, portions of the school with no sprinkler system protection) the school also does not meet basic measures of accessibility per the Americans with Disabilities Act. And, due to the lack of new structures connecting buildings, it is not a secure school, as outside doors are left open to the public all day, every day!
This is unacceptable.
Prior to removing the school from the CIP, the date for modernization of the high school had already been pushed back to 2023. Despite being delayed time and time again, Poolesville cluster advocates worked in good faith with MCPS to advocate for state and county funds, and trusted that our support would ensure that money would be available to build a new Poolesville High School when it was our turn. Now, after over a decade of being told we would have a new school "soon", the proverbial “can” is being kicked down the road—and Poolesville students, once again, are coming up empty-handed.
This is not right.
Students in the Poolesville cluster have as much right as those in other parts of Montgomery County to attend a safe and secure school that is accessible for all. We remind you of your charge to represent every student in the county; we demand you make the right decision for the students in the Poolesville cluster. Please include a modernization project for Poolesville High School in the 2019-2024 CIP budget. Please don’t forget Poolesville students and the promises that were made to them.
Sincerely,
(Your name) - ages of children if applicable
